…and February 18 is Women’s Healthy Heart Day!
Nearly half of all patients who have heart attacks have “normal” cholesterol levels and nearly 75% of patients with premature coronary artery disease have normal LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. One important step to reduce your risk is the VAP blood panel.
VAP, which stands for vertical auto profile, is a test for cholesterol that is much more specific than routine cholesterol tests. The VAP was developed at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. In 1999, Atherotech, also located in Birmingham, patented the VAP test and is currently the only company with rights to produce it.
What’s different about VAP testing?
Routine blood cholesterol testing checks high density lipoproteins (HDL), also called “good cholesterol” and low density lipoproteins (LDL), or “bad cholesterol.” These tests are roughly 40% accurate in predicting risk for heart attack.
The VAP test further breaks down HDL and LDL into subtypes, giving highly specific information about the risk for developing cardiovascular disease and heart attack. The complete VAP panel increases detection of true cardiovascular risk over an ordinary lipid panel by 40%. For example, an elevated LDL subtype, Lp(a), (pronounced “Lipo-little a”), is a routine part of the VAP test. An elevated Lp(a) suggest an increased risk of heart attack by up to 25 times.
In January, 2011, Tenpenny IMC contracted with Arthrotech to provide the VAP panel for our patients. The complete panel not only includes cardiovascular markers, such as homocystiene and c-reactive protein (CRP-hs), the complete panel also includes a thyroid panel, insulin level, HbA1C, 25-OH vitamin D test and more!
