Tenpenny Integrative Medical Center Offers Programs to Encourage
Women to Make Health a Priority; Live Happier, Healthier Lives

(Middleburg Heights, OH) – The recent choices made by Angelina Jolie have heightened the focus on the health of women. May is National Women’s Health Month, an opportune time for women to realize that they must first take care of themselves to successfully take care of their families.

“In my many years as a pediatrician, I have had the opportunity to meet thousands of mothers,” said Dr. Janet Levatin, M.D., of the Tenpenny Integrative Medical Center (TIMC).  “I admire and respect all mothers because they work so hard and are so wonderfully protective of their infants and children, but many of them need to take better care of themselves.”

Levatin said breast and cardiovascular health are major issues for TIMC’s female clientele.  Both rank high nationally as leading killers of women, which makes the suburban Cleveland-based center’s Women’s Health Program a key tool for women in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Among the alternatives to identify breast abnormalities is thermography, a technique for detecting heat-emitting areas in the breast.  A thermogram is an infra-red image that identifies subtle changes in the tissues that could be a dilated blood vessel, area of inflammation, and infection or even a possible tumor. Thermography differs from mammography in more than one way.

“Unlike a mammogram, a thermogram involves no pain, no radiation and no breast compression,” Levatin said. “Breast thermography was FDA approved in 1982 as an adjunctive tool to be used for breast health. The scan can identify subtle changes many years before they are identified on a mammogram. A woman then has time to change her diet, and institute a supplement and life style program to restore the tissues. While mammograms can be useful, they are a late test, meaning, they often fail to identify the earliest changes that can be addressed noninvasively. In addition, mammography often detects a ‘problem’ that leads to many unnecessary procedures.”

Heart disease is another silent killer of women.  TIMC offers two unique blood profiles that are far more advanced than the routine testing cholesterol testing used by conventional doctors.  One is the VAP cholesterol profile from Atherotech; the other is from California-based Berkeley Heart Lab.  Both allow TIMC to examine more accurately the lipid levels and develop patient-specific programs for heart health.

“We’re starting to use genomic testing to determine whether a low-dose aspirin plan or supplements and dietary changes are the best options,” Levatin said.  “Many people eat who even eat an organic diet a diet may be missing the nutrients they need, which can lead to cardiovascular, metabolic, and weight problems. Using our unique tests, we can help patients with a program designed specifically for their needs.”

I have long said that it is best for us to raise our children with as few commercial products as possible, and to use natural alternatives whenever feasible. I recently came across evidence confirming that these principles are sound, and that it’s more important than ever to make wise choices when it comes to what we buy for our children.

Washington state passed a law in 2008 requiring manufacturers of children’s products to disclose the presence of 66 chemicals identified as toxic. These particular chemicals were targeted as “necessary-to-report” because they are linked to disorders such as developmental and reproductive problems, endocrine gland disruption, and cancer… serious stuff!

Recently several companies, including Walmart, Target, Gap, and Gymboree, made the required disclosures, revealing that over 5,000 children’s products contained toxins, including metals (mercury, cadmium, antimony, cobalt, and molybdenum), flame retardants, fragrances, phthalates (the chemicals that give plastic products flexibility), and more. The products reported are commonly used: clothing, toys, bedding, arts and crafts supplies, shoes, and baby products. Also on the list are jewelry, accessories, cleaning products, hair products, and furniture.

As I walk through the Big Chain stores that are so popular today and look at the plethora of plastic products for sale, I can’t help but think of them as “junk,” the same way I look at the poor quality, mass-produced, chemical-laced junk we call “food.”  When I see parents dress their kids in polyester clothes, give them plastic toys to play with, wipe their faces with baby wipes, use fragranced products to launder their clothes, and allow toxic vaccines as part of their “well baby” care, I wonder what is going to become of the next generation of children? Is it even possible to live a more natural, healthier existence?

Washington state is to be commended for passing such legislation. The companies that complied with the reporting requirements are to be commended as well. Due to their efforts, consumers can make more informed choices when shopping for their children. Hopefully more states  – and our federal government — will step up to the challenge so parents can protect their children from the harmful chemicals that have become entrenched in today’s consumer society.

Here are a few principles I recommend to create a less toxic environment for your children:

1. Use organic cotton clothes and bedding, remembering that these item are on your child 24/7. Avoid synthetic fabrics as much as possible; avoid fabrics treated with flame retardants.

2. Avoid plastic containers, especially soft plastics. Never microwave in plastic if you microwave at all.

3. Avoid fragranced cleaning and personal care products.

4. Get active in your local community. Put pressure on companies to stop manufacturing and carrying products that are toxic to our children. Support local vendors who provide natural items, such as wooden toys and whole foods.

5. Get active nationally. Put pressure on our state and federal governments to ban toxic chemicals in our children’s products.

By educating ourselves and making wise choices on what businesses we support, perhaps there is still a way to create a healthier future and healthier planet for our children and future generations.

Symptoms from All Types of Allergens are Eliminated with Noninvasive Treatments from the Tenpenny Integrative Medical Center

(Middleburg Heights, OH) – This year’s allergy season is off to a fast start.  Some 90 million people suffer from environmental allergies, making pain and discomfort common companions as the seasons change. While over-the-counter and prescription drugs provide temporary relief for consumers, medications are not a solution to allergy-based problems.

“You don’t have to live with allergies and take drugs that can have significant side effects,” said Sandi Asazawa, P.A., of the Tenpenny Integrative Medical Center (TIMC) in Middleburg Heights.  “We have 15 years of experience using our noninvasive method to resolve symptoms associated with spring and fall allergies. In fact, people have come from more than 40 states and 12 countries to go through our program, get relief without drugs or shots.”

The Tenpenny Sensitivity Reduction Technique (T-SRT) is a unique, noninvasive treatment method.  Kinesiology, commonly known as muscle testing, is used to identify which allergens are causing a reaction. A proprietary system of tapping on specific acupuncture points adjusts the body’s response to allergens, so the patients become symptom-free. In addition to pollen and grasses, T-SRT can remove sensitivities to hundreds of food and environmental allergens.

Melinda D. traveled from Indiana and said the T-SRT program was an “answer to a prayer” for relief of her decades-long allergies.

“I have been allergic to mold, indoor dust, latex and rubber for almost 30 years,” she said.  “After T-SRT, I went into a tire store and has no reactions.  Before my treatments, I would have been sick within two minutes. I’m so happy to have relief.”

On average, a patient undergoes 12 treatments; annual checkups are then recommended. “We call the annual visits a ‘tune up’, similar to going to the dentist to have your teeth cleaned. The T-SRT treatments are very long lasting. The money spent on the program truly is a long term investment in your health,” states Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, the founder of TIMC and developer of the program.

“These treatments are painless,” Asazawa said.  “At least one-third of our patients are children. The youngest child we’ve treated was only six months of age. She was suffering from reflux caused by a reaction to breast milk and was fine in only 3 treatments. I love working with this program because it helps people of all ages and with so many different sensitivities.”

While no treatment works 100% of the time, T-SRT has an overall success rate of nearly 85%.  A free, 15-minute phone consultation with Asazawa is all it takes to determine if T-SRT is the right for you.

Today was Earth Day. Here are a few suggestions for helping and loving Earth while taking care of yourself in better ways.

1. Eat healthfully. Choose foods that are grown sustainably and preferably locally. When foods are grown with commercial pesticides and fertilizers, the process pollutes the earth and the chemical residues end up in your body. Foods that are grown far away and shipped long distances lack optimal vitamin and mineral content as they are picked before ripe and lose nutrition as they age. They also use precious fuel resources when trucked long distances. Choose locally or regionally grown food from reputable growers. Farmers markets and CSA (community supported agriculture) deliveries are great choices. Locally owned and managed markets often carry healthfully-sourced veggies and fruits.

2. Avoid chemicals whenever possible. Chemicals in our cleaning products, garden and lawn care products, and personal care products not only negatively impact us, but they pollute the earth. Fragrance chemicals found in cleaning and personal care products, for example, take many years to degrade in the environment, polluting ground water, and sickening animals. They accumulate in our bodies and lead to all kinds of health problems such as allergies, hormone imbalances, and cancer. Make simple choices such as cleaning with vinegar and baking soda; using organic lawn care; choosing natural bar soaps and shampoos instead of liquid versions; and moisturizing with coconut oil and shea butter.

3. Walk or bike if you can. Whenever possible, avoid using your car. Not only does this cut down on pollution, it’s also good exercise.

4. Green your medicine. Too many Americans are taking too many pharmaceuticals. Most chronic illnesses are lifestyle illnesses, meaning they can be reversed or healed with proper diet, nutritional supplements, and use of herbs and homeopathic remedies, acupuncture, chiropractic, and  energy healing to assist the body in healing itself.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Can Severely Compromise Quality of Life

Food Allergies Often Cause IBS, Which Can Be Treated With a Unique, Trademarked Procedure from the Tenpenny Integrative Medical Center

(Middleburg Heights, OH) – With billions upon billions of bacteria in the bowel, the potential for a disruption to lead to considerable discomfort is significant. The friendly bacteria help digest our food and regulate bowel function, so eating the wrong kinds of foods can cause that delicate balance to be upset in what is commonly known as irritable bowel syndrome.

Janet Levatin, M.D., of the Tenpenny Integrative Medical Center (TIMC) in Middleburg Heights, says what you eat, and how much you consume, can trigger symptoms known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

“If you’re eating food that you may have an unknown sensitivity to, not only will it cause intestinal inflammation, but you’re not going to digest and absorb properly,” Dr. Levatin said. “Also, lack of proper tone in the abdominal nervous system can be responsible for constipation, diarrhea, and other symptoms commonly associated with irritable bowel syndrome.”

IBS affects nearly one in every ten adult Americans, with women twice as likely to suffer from its discomfort than men. By definition, this intestinal disorder causes stomach and abdominal pain, bloating, and either constipation or diarrhea. IBS ranks second
behind the common cold as the most frequent causes of absenteeism in the American workplace.

Levatin added that irritable bowel syndrome is not a disease; it can’t be transferred from person to person. However, it is a chronic condition that can greatly interfere with one’s life, and it needs to be taken seriously. Symptoms can vary from day to day, and are often disruptive to a person’s routine. Treatment often includes lifestyle changes, avoiding foods that trigger symptoms, getting regular exercise and managing stress.Identifying the foods that are the culprits can be challenging. At TIMC, this is done
through the use of a trademarked technique known as the Sensitivity Reduction Technique (SRT).

“When patients go through our program, we use energy techniques to identify the offending foods and then use an acupressure and tapping protocol to introduce a new pattern into the body. Using principles based on acupuncture, it is often unnecessary for patients to follow a highly restrictive diet,” Levatin said.

The SRT procedure uses kinesiology (commonly known as muscle response testing) to determine which substances patients may react to, and acupressure to essentially neutralize the symptoms that they cause. The procedure is safe for both children and
adults with food-related sensitivities. In fact, TIMC has treated children as young as six weeks of age with this amazingly powerful technique.

Levatin encourages anyone who has bowel-related issues to contact the TIMC at 440-239-3438 for a free, 15-minute phone consultation. SRT is so popular people from 42 states and 14 nations have visited the Center to feel better through this successful
treatment option.

Other programs for GI health at TIMC include stool testing using specialty labs, blood and saliva gluten sensitivity testing, and an advanced GI health program called Detox 360.

As a pediatrician, I offer school, camp, and sports physicals for children whose parents choose to not vaccinate. Many people do not know that vaccination is an elective procedure and is a choice… not a requirement. No matter what your child’s physician or school tells you, the law is clear on this point.

Vaccination laws vary by state, with most states offering a religious or philosophical exemption to parents. Ohio is one of the 19 progressive states that offers parents both philosophical and/or religious exemption options. Ohio law reads as follows: “A pupil who presents a written statement of the pupil’s parent or guardian in which the parent or guardian declines to have the pupil immunized for reasons of conscience, including religious convictions, is not required to be immunized.” This means that if you have examined the evidence, and decided the risk of the vaccine is greater than the risk of the illness, you can write a statement declining vaccines to submit to your local school. The law does not require you to state your specific philosophical or religious view, so you do not need to explain or defend your decisions.

Mayer Eisenstein, MD and his daughter, Jen Eisenstein, NP, of the Chicago Eisenstein Clinics also do not vaccinate children, and support a parent’s right to choose. Here is a quote about their work: “Dr. Eisenstein and his practice have cared for more than 50,000 children who were minimally or not vaccinated at all. There is virtually no autism, asthma, allergies, respiratory illness, or diabetes in his unvaccinated children, an impressive statistic when compared to national rates.”

My observations concur with the findings from Dr. Eisenstein’s practice. There is no doubt in my mind that vaccination contributes to these health problems, and more. It is important to educate yourself before submitting your child to any elective procedure, especially vaccination, which involves repeated injections of much foreign matter into the body. It is equally important to seek health care from a provider who supports the healthful ways you are raising your child.

I am here to answer your questions about healthful living while giving your child a check up, without any pressure to vaccinate. I view wellness visits, sports physicals and school check ups as a time to discuss nutrition, developmental milestones and wellness approaches for your child. It is a time for you AND your child to have a positive experience at a health care facility!

Call today to schedule your child’s annual checkup and get your forms signed for summer camp, sports programs, and the upcoming school year. One parent said to me recently, “Of course I bring my children to you…with your help, I am protecting my most precious investment!”

A few months ago I posted a blog about an 18 month old little boy who was suffering from several chronic conditions. Bobby (not his real name) had allergies, eczema, asthma, gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD), growth failure, and recurrent strep throat and MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staph aureus) skin infections. Specialists had prescribed steroid creams, an inhaled medication called albuterol, oral and topical antibiotics, and medication for his GERD.

Not satisfied with his ongoing problems and all the medications he was prescribed, his mother sought alternative  care. I’m happy to report that with the dietary changes his mother made and the treatment plan I recommended, he is doing much, much better! Here are the elements of his program.

  1. Nutrition: Bobby’s mother suspected he was gluten sensitive. She had him tested and found he was positive for a gene that predisposes people to developing gluten sensitivity. He also had anti-gluten antibodies in a stool test, a diagnostic sign of gluten sensitivity. Since adopting a gluten-free diet, rich in organic, whole fruits and vegetables, he has had a growth spurt and and his GERD has resolved completely.
  2. Targeted Supplements: In addition to encouraging the gluten-free diet, I recommended Vitamin D, 2000 IU per day, and a high-quality probiotic. Vitamin D assists the immune system and is necessary for many other systems in the body to function optimally. Probiotics restore the vital balance of good bacteria in the gut, which had been disrupted by GERD medication and antibiotics. A healthy gut is critically important for healthy lungs and skin.
  3. Respiratory Care: In addition to the albuterol being used to suppress his episodic asthma symptoms, I prescribed nebulized glutathione. As explained by Dr. Mark Hyman, glutathione is the mother of all anti-oxidantsand the body’s most important natural anti-inflammatory agent. It helps inflamed tissues to repair over time. Bobby used the nebulized glutathione three times per week as a routine and twice daily during acute asthma attacks. As the glutathione has healed his lungs, his asthma has nearly resolved and his need for albuterol treatments has dramatically decreased.
  4. Skin Care: To help Bobby’s skin, I advised the use of only simple, single-ingredient substances such as coconut oil or shea butter for moisturizing. Colloidal silver gel and calendula-containing Herbal Ed’s Salve were used on infection-prone areas, eliminating the need for topical antibiotics. All antibacterial soaps, hand sanitizers, and wipes were removed from the household, as these contribute to resistant bacteria such as MRSA. His mother also purchased a filter to remove chlorine from his bath water. Bobby’s skin is now normal, except for slight dryness, and he no longer has MRSA outbreaks.
  5. Homeopathy: I prescribed an individualized homeopathic remedy for Bobby, Kali carbonicum 200, one of the many remedies known for treating asthma, which he repeated periodically over time. I also prescribed him some combination remedies targeted at resolving Staph and Strep infections. Homeopathy is a 200-year-old system of medicine that is individualized to the person, and assists the body in correcting itself. It is safe, easy to administer, cost effective, and can be used with all other forms of treatment as it has no interactions. It is a perfect component to include in the treatment of any child with chronically poor health.

Within just a few months Bobby was growing well, his skin was mostly clear, and the asthma had nearly resolved. He has had no antibiotics since starting care with me, and rarely needs albuterol. I’ve shared this story to encourage parents to adopt dietary changes and a program of natural therapies if their children have been diagnosed with medical conditions, instead of believing a lifetime of prescription drugs and specialist appointments is inevitable. Instead, correct the underlying abnormalities and remove the causes of illness when possible. Our children’s health — and our future as humans — depend upon it.

Heart disease is a major problem in the US.

Every year, about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack. About 600,000 people die from heart disease in the United States each year-that’s 1 out of every 4 deaths. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. But no reason for despair. The right plan will get you and keep you on the right path!

Plan for Prevention

  • Get a VAPP cardiovascular blood assessment: This is the most comprehensive assessment available. In addition to routine cholesterol markers, The VAPP test clarifies risk and drives a personalized treatment approach based cardiometabolic risk. The VAPP test offered at TIMC also includes a full chemistry profile and 8 other advanced markers for heart disease. With insurance, the maximum out of pocket expense for this test is guaranteed to be only $39.
  • Eat a healthy diet. Choosing healthful meal and snack options can help you avoid heart disease and its complications. Be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables—and do your best to avoid the 4 Great Whites: white sugar, white flour, white rice and white cow’s milk. Gluten free and dairy free greatly diminish inflammation. Try it for 30 days and see how you feel.
  • Exercise regularly. Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight and lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Our new VibaBody Slimmer shortens your time at the gym to just 10 minutes, three times per week!
  • Monitor your blood pressure. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, so be sure to have it checked on a regular basis.  Important nutrients for lowering your blood pressure are magnesium; CoQ10 and Hawthorne berry extract.
  • Don’t smoke. Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease. If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, quit as soon as possible.  Our acupuncturist, Linda Corlett, offers an easy, 3 session smoking cessation program.
  • Manage your blood sugar. Monitor your blood sugar and HbA1C levels closely. Diabetes is a silent killer…and we have answers to your diabetes problem to resolve it, once and for all.

This February, take control of your heart health. Those who love you will be glad you did.

Certain elements in our society seem to thrive on making us feel afraid. We are warned that if we don’t get the flu shot, we (or our children) may catch the flu and die. We are told that if we do get flu, we should treat it with the antiviral medication Tamiflu. The flu is presented as an aggressive virus, lurking around every corner, waiting to attack us and take us down. The flu shot is portrayed as the panacea for all this suffering. We are warned that without it, we will no doubt succumb to the “deadly” flu.

Many people, however, have become aware that flu shots are not only ineffective, but contain ingredients that can degrade our health, lead to devastating disability (such as Guillain Barre syndrome), or even death. We has also learned that Tamiflu has very limited effectiveness, has serious side effects, and is contributing to the rise of viruses that are resistant to treatment.

Instead of being taken in by all the hype, take matters into your own hands and stay healthy during the flu season by eating well, getting enough sleep, washing your hands, and maintaining a good vitamin D level. If you feel that something more is needed, homeopathy is the best choice. As a preventive, homeopathy boosts your resistance to influenza viruses; and should a viral illness catch up with you, homeopathic treatment can be individualized for your case.

There are a couple of homeopathic approaches to preventing influenza. One is to take homeopathic Influenzinum at regular intervals, such as weekly, during the flu season. Influenzinum is made from an extraordinarily small sample of  the influenza virus, and in this way it is similar to the vaccine. It is serially diluted and succussed (shaken with impact) until the actual virus is no longer present in the remedy, but its immune-stimulating properties remain. Unlike the flu vaccine it contains no actual flu virus and no toxic ingredients. Influenzinum can be take alone or in a combination homeopathic remedy such as GripiaPro or FlumaxPro (by Apex Energetics and available at TIMC). These combination remedies also contain Oscillococcinum which can be taken alone (to prevent flu if one is exposed, or has early flu symptoms), or in the combination remedies.

Homeopathy can work wonders to quickly you get back on your feet if a virus does get you down. Since homeopathy stimulates the body’s immune system and natural defense mechanisms, homeopathic treatment truly improves your health. Whether your illness is caused by influenza or an influenza-like virus does not matter: the treatment will work in either case. Here are a few commonly recommended flu remedies and their indications:

  • Gelsemium: this remedy is recommended for symptoms of feeling chilled, especially across the back; headache and heaviness of the eyelids; and low thirst. Other symptoms include feeling weak, sleepy, and lethargic.
  • Eupatorium perfoliatum: the person who needs this remedy feels chilled to his core but despite being chilly, will ask for cold food and drinks. In addition to a watery, runny nose, she will be very achy in her muscles, and even say her bones hurt. The person feels desperate due to the aches and pains.
  • Bryonia: the person who needs this remedy is typically warm and sweaty, feels dry and thirsty for large amounts of water. Instead of diarrhea, he may be constipated. All the body aches and pains are worse with movement: his chest will hurt when he coughs, and a headache, if present, will hurt more with sudden movement. He will be irritable and wish to be left alone.

Since homeopathics are diluted and work on the energy body, they are safe to give to children, elders, and pregnant or nursing women. The indicated homeopathic remedy should be taken under the tongue in the 30C or 30X potency, 3-4 times daily, with nothing else by mouth for at least 15 minutes before and after. It is safe to use these and other homeopathic remedies at home.

When other illnesses are involved, such as, asthma or bronchitis or GI symptoms, selecting the appropriate remedy can be more complex and require in-depth training. I can help you select the correct remedy if you need additional help.

New Patent Application for Oxidizing Agent:
toddler boy and vaccine “Current methods used to inactivate living pathogens in vaccine production involve the use of chemical agents such as formaldehyde or beta-propiolactone to chemically modify the genetic material of the pathogen. However, there is substantial evidence that both of these agents are human and animal carcinogens.

For example, studies in rats exposed to formaldehyde by inhalation have shown that formaldehyde induces squamous-cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity. Additionally, formaldehyde has been shown to be genotoxic in vitro and in vivo. Both genotoxicity and cytotoxicity play an important role in the carcinogenicity of formaldehyde.

Although the concentration of formaldehyde in vaccines is typically low (below 0.02%),
this represents up to 50-100 micrograms of formaldehyde per injected dose in many vaccines…Particularly dangerous is the amount of formaldehyde that is injected into infants and small children during the course of multiple vaccinations. While the amount of formaldehyde in each vaccine dose is low, the combined amount can become substantial.”

Comment:

According to Manuel’s Web, 0.02% is 0.2 mg or 200 mcg, making the sum total of formaldehyde in anthrax vaccines even larger and more disconcerting.

Vaccines that contain formaldehyde include nearly all pediatric and adult flu shots; all forms of pediatric and adolescent pertussis vaccines (DTaP and the teen version, Tdap); and injectable polio vaccines (IPV) vaccines. Vaccines given under special circumstances also contain formaldehyde: tetanus boosters (dT, DT and TT), Japanese encephalitis vaccine, rabies vaccines and anthrax vaccine (given as six doses).

Let’s add up the amount of formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, is injected into children by the time they are five years of age. Assuming they get all doses of all recommended vaccines on time and according to the 2012 vaccination schedule:

  • Hepatitis b – 3 doses x 15 mcg each
  • DTaP – 5 doses x 100 mcg each
  • Polio (IPV) – 5 doses x 200 mcg each
  • Influenza – 6 doses x 25 mcg each
  • Hepatitis A – 1 dose x 100 mcg each

Total: 1,795 mcg = 1.795 milligrams

Through sloppy and negligent math, lawmakers and manufacturers failed to identify that infants received as much as 87.5 micrograms of mercury (thimerosal) by six months of age. Again, through sloppy and negligent math, lawmakers and manufacturers fail to throw up a red flag regarding the large amount of formaldehyde injected into young bodies with developing brains, neurological systems and organs.
